Assistance for homeowners? for people that got laid off.?
my wife just got laid off and in a matter of a few months i won’t be able to afford to pay our Mortgage by myself. i was wondering if there were any assistance for people like me. i tried to search the internet but there seems to be a lot of scam sites. any information would help thanks!
Call your lender, explain the situation and try to work something out. It may take multiple calls, and you may have to push if you’re in good standing, they may be willing to reduce payments temporarily, or push some payments back. If you’re in an area that hasn’t been hit hard by the foreclosure crisis or the housing bust, they may not budge. You’ll never know until you ask. There are companies or sites that tell you they’ll do this for you for a fee — DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THEM because they’re not going to do anything that you cannot do yourself. You may want to ask about a short sale (push for some kind of help before going for that, though)
You may want to poke around @ http://www.hud.gov/foreclosure/ (I haven’t gone through it, and I’m not sure if it will be help to you or not, but it’s worth a look).
If you’ve got a spare room, consider it renting it out for 6-12 months to bring in extra income. (Write a solid rental agreement, do a background check, and collect 2mo rent up front [first & sec deposit]). If your wife works in a field where it may prove difficult or impossible to find a comparable job in 2-3 months, she may want to look fast food or discount retailers. Not glamorous or great, but if they help stave off a foreclosure, those jobs are well worth it until something better comes along. If you guys don’t have a budget, sit down and make one — look @ what you’re spending where, and figure out what sacrifices you can make.
Hopefully, things get better for the two of you soon, or you’re able to work something out with your lender.
